You should be entitled to both a compensation for the delay, as well as a refund for the tickets you bought extra.
But for your next time remember that you have rights as a passenger. In case of a disruption you are entitled to continue your trip on a different service in comparable circumstances. The railway must exchange tickets to that effect if needed. If they do not do that you can make your own arrangements and request them to refund the extra costs.
But the first thing you need to do in such a case is always contact the train staff. They will help you.
Personally I would never buy another ticket. If the railway staff were to refuse to help me I would just get on the next train no matter what.
